On keeping the big secret...& Baylor's Nursery

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

When we found out we were pregnant (October of 2011), I was 8 weeks along and couldn't believe it. I had been living with the pregnancy Nazi for 3 months and had to sneak tests when I thought I was pregnant. Coming from a baseball background, he's all about the karma and god forbid we talk about a "no hitter" before the "game" is over. I know...right? Welcome to my life. SO...needless to say, when I finally got a positive test, I was ready to shout it high & low (in the confines of our home!).
Being the Beliebers that we are, I decided to announce our poppy seed embryo to Collin by playing "Baby" by the Biebs on repeat until he woke up from his slumber. Albeit confused, he finally got the message and we spent the next bajillion hours talking about what was to come. It was such an exciting day and every day has just gotten more exciting since (minus the million prego shots, glucose tests, the entire labor process and the hormonal rollercoaster post partum...but yeah, exciting).

One of the things we decided early on was that we weren't going to find out gender and we wanted to keep the name(s) a secret until the little one arrived. We got a lot of crap for it and a whole lot of pressure from our parents all the way to random strangers (really...why do you care anyways, random lady at Target?)  This was such an awesome experience and felt like our little secret from the whole world - and as lame as this sounds, it sort of kept the whole experience a little bit private for us, which is just how we liked it.

Now, it's not for everyone and if you're a planner, then don't even think about it. We had barely any clothes for Baylor when he arrived, and he spent the first two months of his life in grey & white everything. Lucky for us, he is ALL boy so we never had strangers ask if it was a boy or a girl (so rude, anyways...right?) We're not all about the pink or the blue anyways, so it wasn't too far from what we probably would have bought if we knew the gender.

The nursery was probably the biggest challenge, as you really have to go generic with colors, art, bedding and everything else in between. Lucky for us, my middle name oughta be Design Challenge. I live for that type of thing. I didn't start the nursery until about 31 weeks along (big mistake...HUGE!) but procrastination is also sort of my thing, so whatevs.

I am absolutely thrilled with how it turned out and feel like it's the perfect space for Baylor. One of our biggest goals in doing a nursery was to put furniture in there that we could use in our house once our kids are older. I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on 'baby' furniture that was just going to be dropped off at the goodwill once they turned 4. We scoured lots of antique stores and random little shops for the perfect pieces and to be totally honest, I can't wait to move some of them out of the nursery and into the living room or the kitchen.

What a beautiful nursery! I will be using this for my inspiration! Already found that bed as stated on Amazon... Only $180?! Super score. You're amazing and thank you for all the recommendations! Little Baylor is lucky to have such a chic mama!

Love the nursery- especially the art wall! I just put in my vote for you on project nursery!
A question for you - did you do anything special to secure to art/frames to the wall? Some people have warned me to be careful of hanging things above the crib?
Thanks!

Thank you!! We put eye hooks and wire in the back of each frame and then hung them on heavy duty picture hangers. We also did quite a few door slamming tests to make sure nothing affected them once they were on the wall! I got my fair share of warnings and still do, but I feel pretty confident in the security. Thanks for checking it out! :)

In LOVE with this nursery! Totally my style. The mix of patterns with the black white and red are super chic. Great job! I recently finished mine and wish I had seen yours first for ideas! :)

Love this nursery. We aren't finding out the sex of our #2 that's on the way. I love how neutral but still fun this nursery is! Would you mind sharing the color of your changing table dresser?
Thanks for sharing this beautiful nursery. Your little guy is adorable!

Thank you! It's the BEST surprise ever! The dresser was actually a vintage piece of furniture that we bought and it was already that color! Wish I could be of more help! Sorry! xo.

I'm obsessing over the little blocks you have. Any chance you can share the source?
